The National Waymarked Trails, starting with the Wicklow Way, were dreamed up, and brought into reality, by J.B. Malone in 1982. Malone had the idea to try and establish a trails network that Irelands Way Marked Trailswould circumnavigate the whole of the country, which is why the South Leinster Way and the East Munster Way followed on from the Wicklow Way in an almost loop around the bottom of the country.

Over the years, that idea has evolved into a network of 42 trails that criss-crosses all over the Irish countryside. In this list are the famous five: the Wicklow Way, the Dingle Way, the Kerry Way, the Beara Way, and the Western Way. Some other great, but often less well known trails are the Slieve Bloom Way in the Slieve Bloom Mountains, the Miner’s Way and Historical Trail in Co. Roscommon, and An Slí Cholmcille in Co. Donegal.

In 2019, our good friends, Ellie and Carl from Tough Soles finished a challenge they had set themselves in 2017, to walk each of these 42 trails and to document, blog and video as much of the 4000 or so kilometres as they could.

Visiting their blog is a treasure trove of information about these trails and full of handy details too like, how to access them by public transport, or the best stop off points for wild camping along the way. They offer plenty of tips on gear and clothing as well as video blogs both long and short on the trails themselves.

There are lots of variations in the types of walks that each Way Marked Trail takes, some are loops with ups and downs, some feature long stretches along road and public footpaths and some are wild, high and remote. All of them however feature “Elvis”, your handy Waymarked Trail post marker. Tough Soles have also developed route maps that can be downloaded in PDF format to use along the routes.
