Meindl boots are a long-term investment. The nubuck leather uppers on models like the Bhutan MFS and Vakuum GTX are designed to outlast the soles — and Meindl build their boots specifically to be resoleable, so a well-maintained pair can give you a decade or more of reliable use. That longevity depends entirely on the care routine you put in from the first outing. This guide covers the correct approach for every upper material in the Meindl range, with specific instructions for each of Meindl's own care products.
Step one — identify your upper material
Care requirements vary by upper material, so the starting point is knowing what your boot or shoe is made from. The main upper types across the Meindl range are:
- Waxed nubuck leather — the most common upper in the range. Found on the Bhutan MFS (men's and women's), Vakuum GTX, Meran GTX (men's and women's), Peru GTX, Terlan GTX, Trento GTX, and Baltimore GTX. Nubuck is full-grain leather buffed to a soft, slightly textured surface. It is highly durable and responds well to wax-based treatments.
- Velour leather and mesh — found on the Respond GTX and Respond 2 Mid GTX. Velour leather has a different surface finish to nubuck and requires proofing spray rather than solid wax. Mesh panels need the same spray treatment.
- Nubuck leather and mesh — found on the Activo GTX, Journey Mid GTX, Journey Pro GTX, Padua GTX, Philadelphia GTX, and Rapide GTX. Combination uppers require proofing spray across both leather and mesh, with wax applied to metal hardware only.
- Nubuck leather (sandals) — found on the Brindisi Sandal and Capri Sandal. Use conditioning spray on leather sections; wax metal hooks and eyelets only.
If you are unsure of your upper material, check the specifications tab on your product page — material type is listed for every model in the Meindl range.
The three Meindl care products — and when to use each
Meindl produce three specific care products for their range. Using the correct product for your upper type matters — the wrong treatment can impair breathability or alter the leather surface in ways that are difficult to reverse.
- Meindl Sportwax — a solid wax in clear or black formulated specifically for nubuck and smooth leather uppers. It nourishes the leather, maintains flexibility, and provides a layer of water resistance. This is the primary care product for waxed nubuck models. One critical instruction from Meindl: do not heat Sportwax before applying. Heating causes the wax to penetrate too deeply into the leather, impairing breathability and wearing comfort. Apply at room temperature only, working it in by hand or with a cloth.
- Meindl Wetproof — a pump spray waterproofer suitable for all upper types, including leather, nubuck, suede, velour, and fabric or mesh sections. It restores DWR (durable water repellency) to the outer surface, helping water to bead off rather than soak in. Use Wetproof on velour and mesh uppers as the primary waterproofing treatment. On nubuck models, use as a finishing spray after waxing. Apply while the surface is slightly damp for best penetration.
- Meindl Conditioner & Proofer — a water-based formula that conditions leather while maintaining its waterproof function. Particularly well-suited to nubuck leather. Use as a lighter, more regular conditioning treatment between full wax applications. It prevents leather from drying out — the primary cause of cracking and waterproofing failure in leather footwear. Ideal for use during periods of heavy use or dry weather when leather loses moisture faster.
Care routine by upper material
Waxed nubuck leather — Bhutan MFS, Vakuum GTX, Meran GTX, Peru GTX, Terlan GTX, Trento GTX, Baltimore GTX
After every hike: Remove laces and insoles. Knock loose dirt from the sole. Use a damp cloth to wipe mud and debris from the upper. Do not soak boots in water or use a jet wash — the force can damage the GORE-TEX® membrane and degrade the bonding between upper and sole. Allow to dry naturally at room temperature. Do not place on a radiator, near a fire, or in direct sunlight.
Every 4–6 outings, or when waterproofing performance drops: Once clean and dry, apply Meindl Sportwax evenly across the upper using a cloth or soft brush. Work it into the leather at the flex points — the toe box area and across the instep — and pay close attention to seams and creases where dryness occurs first. Allow to sit overnight so the leather absorbs the wax fully. Buff lightly with a clean cloth. Apply Meindl Wetproof spray while the upper is slightly damp after cleaning for additional waterproofing.
Between wax applications: Apply Meindl Conditioner & Proofer to keep leather supple and prevent drying during periods of heavy or frequent use.
Velour leather and mesh — Respond GTX, Respond 2 Mid GTX
Do not apply solid wax to velour leather — it clogs the surface texture and can permanently dull the finish.
After every hike: Brush away dry dirt using a soft brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Remove insoles and allow to dry naturally away from direct heat.
Periodically: Apply Meindl Wetproof spray across the full upper — both velour and mesh sections. Apply while slightly damp for best penetration. Allow to dry fully before use. Apply a small amount of wax to metal hooks and eyelets only to prevent corrosion, keeping wax away from the leather sections.
Nubuck leather and mesh — Activo GTX, Journey Mid GTX, Journey Pro GTX, Padua GTX, Philadelphia GTX, Rapide GTX
After every hike: Brush away dry dirt. Wipe with a damp cloth. Remove insoles and dry naturally.
Periodically: Apply Meindl Conditioner & Proofer to nubuck sections. Use Meindl Wetproof spray across both nubuck and mesh to restore water repellency. Wax metal hooks and eyelets only.
Sandals — Brindisi, Capri
After use: Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Allow to dry naturally. Apply conditioning spray to nubuck leather sections periodically. Wax buckles and metal fasteners to prevent corrosion. Store away from direct sunlight between seasons.
Drying your boots correctly
This is the step most commonly done wrong — and it is the one that causes the most damage. Meindl boots contain GORE-TEX® membranes that are permanently bonded to the upper. Excessive heat degrades the adhesive bonding and damages the membrane itself, permanently compromising waterproof performance.
- Do dry naturally at room temperature. Stuff loosely with dry newspaper to absorb internal moisture and help the boot hold its shape.
- Do remove insoles and dry them separately — they hold a significant amount of moisture and dry more effectively outside the boot.
- Do not place on a radiator, near an open fire, in a tumble dryer, under direct sunlight, or inside a car on a warm day.
- Do not use a boot dryer unless it operates at genuinely low temperature — high-temperature dryers cause the same damage as a radiator over time.
Storing between seasons
Clean and treat your boots before putting them away for any extended period. Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight — UV light degrades leather and rubber compounds over time. Avoid damp areas such as garden sheds or garages without climate control. Use wooden shoe trees to maintain the shape of the boot and prevent creasing at the toe box during storage.
Resoling
Meindl design their boots to be resoleable through their authorised repair service. The leather upper on models like the Bhutan MFS and Vakuum GTX is engineered to outlast the sole — meaning resoling extends usable boot life significantly rather than simply delaying disposal. If your upper is still in good condition but the sole has worn significantly, resoling is a genuine option. One reviewer on our site notes using the same pair of Meindl boots for thirty years, with the soles and seals replaced once at the Meindl factory. Contact our team for advice on the Meindl resole service.
