The majority of sleeping bags we stock will have the zip on the left side of the sleeping bag. We do stock a few that have the zip on the right side though. If you have also seen a sleeping bag that has the zip on the right side, please contact us and we can enquire to see if we can special order the item in for you.

We only stock ethically sourced down. The down used in outdoor gear is a natural by product of the food industry; the waterfowl which provide the warm insulation have been farmed or raised for food, not their feathers, and involves no live plucking. By using the plumage for natural insulation, it helps to reduce the amount of agricultural waste The manufacturer with the highest standard of traceability of those that we stock is Mountain Equipment. Every bag comes with a code which you can enter into their website and read the independent audit of the farms and supply chain which supplied the down. Other manufacturers that we use source down from are RDS suppliers - Responsible Down Standard.

My jacket is leaking down

A small amount of down escaping through the fabric or through any stitched seam is expected in any down garment. We do find it more common for this to happen when down is worn in certain activities; travelling in a car for example, as the seat belt is compressing and flattening the down, making them easier to fit through the weave on parts of the fabric, causing the down to find its way out.

Down is exceptionally fine, and the quill of a feather is often quite sharp, so it is common for feathers to penetrate the fabric of these items. If you do see a feather poking through the fabric try not to pull it out. Instead, try to push it back in & gently rub the area between your fingers. Pulling the cluster through the jacket may cause an even bigger hole to develop. Gently rubbing the area where the down or feather was poking through will move the fabric strands back together, helping to seal up the opening.

How should I store my down Sleeping bag?

Down should be stored uncompressed and out of direct sunlight in a dry, cool place. Many down sleeping bags come with a cotton or mesh storage bag. Once you arrive home from a trip air it thoroughly and make sure it is completely dry before putting it back into storage. If the product is still damp after airing, a very short cycle in a tumble dryer on a cool setting should help to complete the drying and restore the loft.

How should I wash my down Sleeping bag/Jacket?

Please give it careful consideration before starting and note if you choose to wash and dry your bag yourself, keep in mind that drying alone will take at least two to three hours (down takes a little longer than synthetic). Allow at least 3-4 hours for a jacket and 6-8 hours for a sleeping bag.

First, look to see if the manufacturer’s washing instructions are printed somewhere on the jacket or bag, either on a tag, draft tube or elsewhere. Follow those instructions.

Before washing, make sure you remove any loose mud or dirt and do up any zips and close any flaps.

It is best to wash your down jacket with a cleaner specifically designed for down or technical outerwear; like Nikwax Down Wash, never use detergent, fabric softeners or conditioners.

My Waterproof Jacket Feels Damp or Is Leaking

If your waterproof jacket seems to be leaking, we first recommend giving it a thorough clean followed by reproofing.

Often, jackets that haven’t been cleaned regularly may give the impression of leaking. Body oils and dirt can block the membrane’s pores, which limits breathability and causes moisture to build up inside — making the jacket feel wet even if it isn’t leaking.

Another common issue is the deterioration of the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating. If you notice that water no longer beads up and rolls off the jacket's surface, it’s a sign that the DWR needs to be renewed. When the outer fabric absorbs water (known as ‘wetting out’), it reduces the membrane's ability to let moisture vapour escape. For garments used frequently, we suggest cleaning and reproofing approximately every six months.

If you believe your jacket has a genuine fault after cleaning and reproofing, please get in touch with us at: returns@greatoutdoors.ie or call +353 1 679 4293

How to Clean and Reproof Your Waterproof Jacket

Washing

The following advice applies to many waterproof garments, but always check the care label on your specific jacket before washing. Either hand-wash or use a washing machine with a technical cleaner such as Grangers Performance Wash, using a gentle 30°C cycle. Avoid regular detergents, fabric softeners, or conditioners, as these can damage the membrane (consider running a rinse cycle beforehand to clear any residues from your machine). Do not dry clean or iron the garment. You can air-dry the jacket, or, if permitted by the care label, tumble-dry on a low heat setting — this can help reactivate the DWR coating.

Reproofing

Most waterproof jackets feature a DWR coating on the outer fabric, which acts as the first layer of water resistance.

This coating will wear off over time and should be restored periodically to maintain performance. While the waterproof membrane underneath remains functional, the jacket's breathability and overall performance will be improved by reapplying a DWR treatment.

After washing, we recommend using a reproofing product such as Grangers Repel to restore the jacket’s water-repellent finish.

dentifying a Leak in Your Sleeping Mat

A leak can sometimes be caused by a small puncture in the mat’s fabric. Slow leaks are particularly difficult to detect. Start by fully inflating the mat and, if possible, submerge it in water — watch for escaping bubbles, which will indicate the location of the puncture. If water testing isn’t an option (such as when you're outdoors), mix water with soap and pour it over the surface of the inflated mat. Look closely for any bubbling that may point to a leak. Use a pen or pencil to clearly mark the affected area for repair.

Once the puncture is identified, proceed with a suitable repair kit, which is often included with the mat.

How to Repair a Sleeping Mat Puncture

Minor leaks (no patch required):

For small punctures, a urethane-based adhesive is ideal. Products from McNett are highly recommended for these kinds of repairs. Apply a dab of adhesive that fully seals the hole and let it cure for 24 hours. If your mat has a smoother fabric surface, peel-and-stick bicycle tube patches can be used for quick, on-the-spot fixes.

More significant holes or tears:

For larger damage, use a self-adhesive fabric patch, like Tenacious Tape, which is commonly used for repairing outdoor gear. Cut the patch into a circular shape, ensuring it extends well beyond the hole. Apply a light layer of urethane adhesive to both the patch and the affected area. Firmly press the patch in place, then wipe off any excess glue from the edges. Allow at least 24 hours for the adhesive to fully cure.

What If Water Has Entered the Mat?

To remove water that has entered the mat, roll it tightly with the valve open to help expel the moisture. Repeat this process several times if necessary. Then, hang the mat upside down with the valve open in a warm, ventilated area. Allow approximately three days for it to dry completely.

How Should I Clean My Tent?

Tent cleaning isn’t usually necessary unless it develops a strong odour or becomes heavily soiled. If it does need cleaning, begin by rinsing off loose dirt using a standard garden hose. For a deeper clean, pitch the tent fully and hand-wash using warm water, a sponge, and a mild soap that is free from detergents. Avoid using dish soap, bleach, stain removers, or any harsh cleaning agents. After washing, rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue. Always air-dry the tent by either leaving it pitched or hanging it on a line. Do not dry clean, machine-wash, or tumble dry your tent, as these processes will strip away the waterproof coatings.

Why Use a Tent Footprint?

A tent footprint is strongly recommended for protecting your tent floor. Specifically designed to match the shape of each tent model, footprints shield the base from abrasion, moisture, and dirt, helping to extend the life of the tent. Some models we carry also allow for a minimalist setup using just the flysheet and footprint — ideal for lightweight trips. To learn more, visit our guide: ‘Are tent footprints worth it?’

How to Repair Tent Fabric Tears

Small fabric or mesh tears can be managed in the field using waterproof, self-adhesive patches designed for tent materials. Seam sealants are another reliable option for minor punctures. For a temporary solution, duct tape can be used, but it should be removed promptly after use, as long-term contact may degrade the fabric. It’s a good idea to carry a repair option on every trip. For significant tears, contact us — we may be able to assist in arranging repairs with the manufacturer.

What to Do If a Tent Pole Breaks

If a pole breaks while you’re out, use the repair sleeve that’s often supplied with your tent. Slide it over the damaged section and secure it in place with tape or by bracing it with a small stick. Should the damage be beyond a temporary fix, please get in touch with us — we can liaise with the supplier on your behalf for a more permanent solution.

Understanding and Reducing Condensation in Your Tent

Condensation forms inside tents when warm, moist air meets cooler surfaces — a common occurrence in damp or chilly conditions.

Primary sources of condensation include:

Rain, humidity, and cool nights increase condensation levels.

A person exhales and evaporates about 1–2 pints of moisture overnight.

Wet ground and damp gear stored inside add to moisture buildup.

While no tent is entirely condensation-proof, good airflow is essential. Allow cooler, drier air to circulate inside while letting warm air escape. Most tents we offer are equipped with mesh panels and breathable fabrics for this purpose. To further reduce condensation, open all vents and doors where conditions allow.
