Salomon

Performance footwear and mountain gear, built in the Alps since 1947.

Salomon have been building mountain performance gear since 1947, starting with ski bindings in Annecy, France. That Alpine engineering heritage runs through everything they make — from the Quest GTX hiking boots that handle Ireland's wettest hills to the Speedcross trail shoes built for fast movement on loose and technical ground.

Footwear is where Salomon genuinely lead the field. The combination of GORE-TEX waterproofing, Contagrip outsoles, and SensiFit construction gives their hiking boots and trail shoes a locked-in feel and ground confidence that's hard to match at any price point. The Quicklace system — a single pull to tension, a tuck to secure — sounds like a small thing until you're adjusting your boots mid-descent in the rain.

Beyond footwear, Salomon's snowsports helmets, goggles, and protection are designed around the same principle: reducing friction between you and the mountain. Their running vests and packs carry that same thinking onto the trail — minimal weight, maximum function, nothing that gets in the way.

Why We Love Salomon

We've been fitting people into Salomon boots (both hiking and ski!) for years and with great reason. They have always been at the front of technology in outdoor gear, quicklace system, sensifit and their contagrip sole all come to mind. They are not afraid to buy into others' ideas either, they feature GORE-TEX heavily as the go-to waterproofing in a lot of their range. We feel that the outdoor gear they make both looks and feels slick and built by someone who wants to use it themselves!

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally yes, though Salomon footwear has a slightly narrower last than many other brands. If you have a wider foot or are between sizes, we'd recommend sizing up half a size. It's also worth accounting for hiking sock thickness — a mid-weight merino or synthetic hiking sock will take up more volume than a thin everyday sock, and your foot naturally swells slightly over the course of a long day. If you're unsure, come in-store and we'll fit you properly — getting this right is worth the extra few minutes.

The Quest GTX is Salomon's most robust hiking boot — a stiff, protective build designed for heavy loads, multi-day routes, and rough terrain where ankle support and durability matter most. The X Ultra is lighter and more flexible, sitting between a hiking boot and a trail shoe — well suited to day hikes, active walking holidays, and mixed-terrain use where you want more agility. The XA Pro is the most trail-running-influenced of the three, with a low-cut profile and aggressive Contagrip outsole built for faster movement on technical ground. All three are available with GORE-TEX waterproofing.

Yes — GORE-TEX is a fully sealed membrane, not a coating, and it's bonded into the upper of all GTX models. It keeps water out from the sides and underneath reliably, even in prolonged wet conditions. The one limitation shared by all low-cut waterproof footwear is the ankle opening — if you're wading through deep puddles or crossing streams, water can enter over the top of the boot. If you're regularly in those conditions, a mid or high-cut GTX boot combined with gaiters gives you the most complete protection.

Quicklace replaces standard two-strand lacing with a single cord that runs through the upper. Pull the cord upward to tighten, then tuck the excess lace and toggle into the small pocket on the tongue to keep it secure and out of the way. To loosen, pull the toggle out and tug the lace end. It's quick to adjust mid-hike — useful when you want to loosen off on the ascent and tighten back down for a descent — and there's no knot to come undone at an inconvenient moment.

Yes you can in Great Outdoors! We have Salomon-trained footwear specialists that can guide you to the right boot flex for your use, and then use our in-store technology to heat the shells and custom-fit the ski boot to your liking.
