Here at Great Outdoors we carry many different brands, thus we have a big list of technology that goes with each item they produce. This is a list of our most popular technologies, along with a brief explanation of how they operate.
Gore-Tex waterproof membrane the gold standard for waterproofing & breathability. It uses a membrane that allows moisture to pass from within the jacket, while remaining at industry-topping waterproof levels.
Merino wool is thinner and softer than ordinary wool, while regulating temperature & odours with ease. Unlike synthetics which are industrially produced from non-renewable fossil energy, Merino wool is a natural fibre grown year-round by Merino sheep,
Omni-Tech is a multi-layered weather protection system designed to keep outside elements from getting in, yet also allows perspiration and moisture to escape to the surface
Columbia's Omni Heat is a series of thermal reflective dots attached to the inside of clothing and outerwear to help reflect back the heat to you to keep you warmer.
Vibram® shoe soles are widely used in the shoe industry because of their reputation for quality, durability, comfort and traction. Vibram® soles are designed to make walking feel as comfortable as possible. So you can enjoy your adventures everyday.
PrimaLoft® insulation is permanently water-resistant. It retains its insulating and lightweight properties for warmth and comfort, even when wet. This is the best synthetic insulation available.
Futurelight is a three-layer fabric comprised of a waterproof-breathable membrane sandwiched between a tough external fabric and a soft liner. This allows air to pass through for better venting and breathability without sacrificing waterproofness and durability.
OutDry® uses a one-piece patented construction process that creates a waterproof breathable barrier. This impenetrable layer is heat-bonded directly to the outer fabric, leaving no seams, no gaps, and no way for water to get in.
NosiLife clothing is treated during the manufacturing process to give it insect repellent properties that will last the lifetime of the garment. Any insects that come into contact with NosiLife clothing will either be repelled or risk being killed by the treatment.
Helly Hansen’s Lifa a yarn technology that moves moisture away from the skin and transports it to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates, leaving the wearer warm, dry, and comfortable.
Helly Tech is the waterproof and breathable outer layer between you and the elements. Its unique membrane will keep water molecules out, while allowing sweat vapor to pass through – keeping you dry from the outside and comfortable on the inside.
Cordura is a synthetic material which is designed to last. It has high tensile strength fibres and will with stand long term wear. It's highly abrasive and in most cases extremely water repellent.
Gore-Tex Pro utilises a revolutionary multi-layer ePTFE-based membrane system and combines high performance face textiles with their patented Micro Grid Backer technology. The latest generation of GORE-TEX PRO can deliver up to 28% more breathability compared to previous versions.
Polartec fleece is a soft synthetic fabric made from polyester fibres that provides warmth without weight and is hydrophobic (absorbs less than 1% of water), making it ideal for use in the outdoors.
Pertex® Quantum uses a tightly woven structure to provide a light and soft fabric that allows insulation to fully loft. This works brilliantly in tandem with down & synthetic jackets to get the most from them.
Recco is a rescue technology used by organised rescue teams as an additional tool to more quickly locate people buried by an avalanche or lost in the outdoors. The system is based on a harmonic radar system and composed of a detector and a passive reflector integrated into outdoor clothing and gears.
Bluesign® helps factories manage silver chemicals with good practice and replace black chemicals with Bluesign® approved. Customers know that a Bluesign® approved fabric has been manufactured in a way is safe for the environment, safe for workers and safe for consumers.
MIPS, or multi directional impact protection system, uses a slip-plane inside a helmet designed to manage the energy from rotational or angular impacts – which significantly reduces the danger of head or brain injuries.
AirZone back panel features increased air space which enables far more breathability and ventilation to help you stay cooler and drier
Hydrophobic down is the term given to down which has been coated and upgraded with a hydrophobic chemical to makes it absorb less water and dry out faster, which can prolong the life of a down jacket.
Comfort fit range are typically wider, more generous, and more supportive than a standard trekking fit. This is perfect for someone with a wider foot who finds it hard to fit comfortable in narrow boots and shoes.
Helly Hansen’s top-level waterproof solution. This is a more waterproof & breathable fabric than any other HellyTech fabric and is built to withstand harsh elements.
Oakley's Prizm lenses boost certain wavelengths of colour vision for improved contrast and detail. This makes the lens very effective for Snowsports & road cycling. Want a bit more info on this? Check out our blog below that details this and other Oakley Tech
GBS or glued and blind stiched seams are a type of wetsuit seam which prevents water entering your wetsuit. GBS seams are constructed by first gluing the edges of the neoprene panels together to prevent water entering the wetsuit.
Sapphire crystal is used for the Power Sapphire lens from Garmin on their top watches. It is incredibly durable and is the third hardest mineral, right behind diamond. As a result, the lens is much harder to scratch than glass.
Polartec® Power Stretch® is a performance-fit fabric platform that raises the bar for stretch fabric capabilities. Advanced dual surface knit construction gives Power Stretch® enough tensile strength for durable shape recovery. Performance wicking abilities mean it keeps up with any activity.
Wide Fit as the name states products that contain this tech come with manufacturers guidance that it fits wider than a standard footwear item from their product line.
