Step-by-Step: How to Measure Your Head

Use a soft tape measure or a piece of string — takes less than a minute.

Wrap the tape Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your head — 1–2 cm above the top of your ears and eyebrows. Keep it level all the way around.

Add 2 cm for comfort Note your measurement in cm, then add 2 cm to the total. This accounts for Tilley's comfort-first fit philosophy. Don't pull the tape tight.

Find your size Use your final measurement (original + 2 cm) to find your size in the chart below. If between sizes, always go up to the larger size.

All measurements are head circumference in centimetres (cm) and inches.

Tip: The most common sizes are S, M, L and XL. If your measurement falls exactly between two sizes, always choose the larger one.

The Two-Finger Fit Test

Once your hat arrives, use this simple check to confirm your fit is correct.

Correct Fit

You can easily insert two fingers, lying flat, between the middle of your forehead and the front of the hat. The hat should rotate left and right with slight friction, and lift up and down without gripping your forehead.

Too Tight

You cannot fit two flat fingers between your forehead and the hat, or there is pressure on your forehead. Size up — Tilley hats are designed to sit comfortably, not grip.

Too Loose

The hat slides around freely or falls over your eyes. Size down. Bear in mind that Tilley hats should feel slightly loose — but not so loose that gravity alone won't keep it on.

How it Should Feel

Tilley hats are worn low on the head and held in place by gravity — not pressure. When it's windy, use the chin cord. A correct-fitting Tilley is so comfortable, you'll forget you're wearing it.
