The benefits of cycling are numerous, the most obvious ones are personal fitness and exercise but it’s also cheaper than public transport and reduces motor vehicle traffic which in turn is easier on the environment.
To encourage people to take up or return to cycling, the new scheme allows you to offset your tax by purchasing up to €1000 of bike and bike gear. This can be done in one transaction, once every 2 years. The actual purchase must be done by your employer, with your employer either bearing the full cost or organizing payments through your wages much like the current bus and rail schemes.
The onus is on the employer to keep any documentation such as invoices and payment details. It doesn’t specifically have to notify revenue of your deal. Sweet. All told, you can save up to 41% on the cost of the bike and related gear through offsetting your PAYE obligations.
We at Great Outdoors have been selling bicycle clothing and equipment for a long time, but you might not know that we also sell bikes, not on the floor but through special orders. We have been doing this long before the Bike to Work scheme was introduced. Approximately 40% of all our staff cycle to work most days so we know a thing or two about the commute. The scheme has only made us busier.
Primarily, we sell Trek Bikes. We can get other brands if needs be but when dealing with Trek, everything is very straightforward and dependable.
