What Makes a Great Hiking Boot in Ireland?

Before we jump into the recommendations, let’s quickly cover what actually matters to us when hiking in Ireland.

Key Features to Look For

  • Waterproofing: Gore-Tex or similar membranes or waterproofing technologies are essential. It is rainy here - simple as that.
  • Grip: Vibram soles or equivalent for wet, uneven terrain - this can heavily differ from one trail to another in terms of conditions, paths, terrain type etc so it is nice to have something ready for all.
  • Support: Especially around the ankle for rough trails - this explains itself.
  • Durability: Leather or reinforced uppers hold up best - a "nice to have" is a rubber or leather cover around the toe area, and even better yet - a full rand (usually the big rubber strip around a boot over the sole) - a great example of this is the Bhutan by Meindl.
  • Comfort: Because blisters can ruin even the best day out - something soft under your foot and the right weight/stiffness for what you want to hike in.

1. Meindl Bhutan MFS – The Bestseller

If you’re after a boot that’ll handle pretty much anything Ireland throws at it, the Meindl Bhutan MFS is hard to beat. We love it, Meindl love it and our customers love it. Check out the reviews section under either the men's or women's model to see the results!

  • Full leather construction for durability
  • Excellent ankle support
  • Waterproof and breathable
  • Built for year-round use

This is the kind of boot you invest in once and rely on for years. It’s especially popular with regular hikers who want something tough, dependable, and comfortable over long distances.

2. Meindl Trento GTX

The all-new Meindl Trento GTX is a fantastic option if you want something a bit softer underfoot without sacrificing support. This is new to our range and we feel represents good value considering the materials used alongside a GORE-TEX lining.

  • Premium leather uppers
  • Slightly wider fit (great for comfort)
  • Gore-Tex waterproofing
  • Cushioned feel for long walks

It’s a brilliant choice for those who find some boots too stiff or narrow. Right out of the box, it feels comfortable and forgiving.

How to Choose the Right Hiking Boots

Still unsure which pair suits you best? Here’s a quick way to narrow it down:

Ask Yourself:

  • How often will I hike?
Occasional walks → go lighter (Merrell, Salomon X-Ultra)
Hill hiking → go more durable (Meindl, Salomon Quest)
  • What terrain will I cover?
    Forest trails → comfort-focused
    Mountains/bog → support and grip
  • Do I need extra width or cushioning?
The Meindl Trento GTX is a great choice here

FAQs

What are the best hiking boots for Ireland’s weather?

Waterproof boots with Gore-Tex lining are essential for our wet weather. Models like the Meindl Bhutan or Salomon Quest 5 GTX are excellent choices.

Are lightweight hiking boots good enough?

Yes—for lighter hikes and dry trails. For rough terrain or winter conditions, a sturdier boot is better. We see people using mid boots like Merrell Moabs, Salomon X-Ultra or Meindl models like the Journey or Respond mid for 3-seasons!

How should hiking boots fit?

They should feel snug but not tight, with room to wiggle your toes. Your heel should stay secure when walking. We like having (roughly) one index fingers-width at the front of your boot when you take the insole out. This accounts for the swelling of your foot over the course of a walk, bigger socks when hiking and leaves enough room for your toes when walking downhill.

How long do hiking boots last?

With proper care, a good pair can last several years, especially full-leather options like Meindl - which we have seen last only until their soles fully wear down!
