Helly Hansen uses three related but distinct fabric technologies, and the names are similar enough that it's easy to mix them up when you're shopping. Here's a straightforward breakdown of what each one actually does, so you can pick the right layer for what you're doing.
LIFA®
LIFA® is Helly Hansen's core moisture-wicking fibre technology. It's a synthetic fabric designed to pull sweat away from your skin and move it to the outer surface of the garment, where it can evaporate faster. It's lightweight, quick-drying, and built primarily for high-output activity — think hiking, running, or anything where you're likely to work up a sweat and need to stay dry rather than warm.
LIFA® Merino
LIFA® Merino combines that same moisture-wicking fibre with natural Merino wool. The wool adds warmth and natural odour resistance, which is useful for multi-day trips or longer wear between washes, while the LIFA® component keeps the quick-dry, moisture-management performance intact. It's a good middle ground if you want more warmth than a pure synthetic baselayer but still need it to manage moisture properly. Some pieces in the range — including the Women's LIFA® Merino Midweight Crew Base Layer — also use what Helly Hansen calls LIFA® Stay Warm technology, aimed at retaining heat alongside the moisture control.
LIFALOFT™
LIFALOFT™ is a different thing entirely — it's an insulation technology, not a baselayer fabric. You'll find it inside ski jackets and other insulated outerwear, where its job is to trap warmth while staying compressible and packable, so you get real warmth without the bulk of traditional insulation.
Which one do you need?
As a rough rule: reach for LIFA® if you're prioritising moisture management for hard, sweaty efforts. Reach for LIFA® Merino if you want that same moisture control plus more warmth and odour resistance for longer days out. And look for LIFALOFT™ when you're choosing an insulated jacket, not a baselayer — it's doing a completely different job.
Our Helly Hansen Baselayers range covers both LIFA® options, including two of our most popular pieces — the Men's LIFA® Merino Midweight Crew Base Layer and the Women's LIFA® Merino Midweight Crew Base Layer. If you're building a full layering system, it's worth pairing a LIFA® or LIFA® Merino base with a LIFALOFT™-insulated jacket on top rather than doubling up on one type of technology.
