How to Choose a Climbing Harness

How to Choose a Climbing Harness

How do you climb most?

  • Gym & sport: lightweight, minimal padding, self-locking waist buckle, two or three gear loops
  • Trad: four or more gear loops, thicker waist padding for long belays, a haul loop for multi-pitch
  • Alpine & mountaineering: low weight over padding, fully adjustable so you can put it on over crampons without untying
  • Ice & mixed: fully adjustable leg loops to fit over winter layers, plus clipper slots for ice screws

Know the parts that matter

  • Belay loop: the strongest, most load-tested point — where your belay device or locking carabiner goes
  • Waist belt: sits above the hip bones; wider padding for hanging, thinner to save weight
  • Gear loops: two on most sport harnesses, four or more for trad and alpine racking

Does it fit properly?

  • Waist belt above the hip bones with no more than a two-finger gap
  • Sit mid-range on the adjustment, so there's room to size over a jacket or down for summer
  • Weight-test it hanging if you can — you should sit upright without straining
  • Check the EN 12277 and/or UIAA certification before you buy, wherever you buy it
