The brand's inception traces back to a moment of inspiration experienced by Gary Erickson, one of the founders, during an arduous 175-mile bike ride. On this "Epiphany Ride," Gary realized he could no longer tolerate unpalatable energy bars. This led to the conception of a more flavorful bar.

After returning home, Gary dedicated six months to perfecting the recipe for what would become the first batch of Clif Bars. Shortly thereafter, these bars became available in stores. Gary chose to name the bar in honor of his father, Clifford, who had instilled in him a love for outdoor adventures and the courage to pursue his dreams.
